Celebrating the Cycling Spirit: Paarl Annual Champagne Ride
Paarl MTB Group has long been a cornerstone of the local cycling community, offering riders of all levels a chance to connect, explore, and celebrate the shared love of mountain biking. Founded by Trevor Clift and Michael Street, the group has grown over the years, attracting passionate cyclists and fostering a welcoming environment. One of their most cherished traditions is the Annual Champagne Ride, a celebratory event held on the first Friday of December.
Origins of the Champagne Ride
The Champagne Ride began as a simple idea among the group’s founders and early members like Noël Droomers, Craig Street, Louis Ferreira, and Johan Wolfaardt. It was envisioned as a way to celebrate the year’s rides and camaraderie. Over time, it became a beloved tradition, marking the end of the year with a festive and informal gathering on the Paarl Mountain.
The Ride
The concept is straightforward: no matter where you start—whether from Northern Paarl or Southern Paarl—the goal is to meet at the top of Paarl Mountain by 6:00 AM. Riders bring along a bottle of champagne, a beer, or their drink of choice (although stories of more adventurous options like brandy and Coke have been shared). The focus is on enjoying the journey, soaking in the breathtaking views, and connecting with fellow cyclists.
Once at the top, the group takes a commemorative photo and spends time mingling, reminiscing about the year’s cycling adventures, and toasting to the vibrant cycling community. The atmosphere is relaxed, with no pressure to race or finish quickly—riders are encouraged to enjoy the experience at their own pace, whether they’re on a gravel bike, e-bike, or mountain bike.
A Celebration for Everyone
The Champagne Ride is open to all riders, regardless of experience or bike type. It’s not about competition but community. The event showcases stunning views from the mountain, offering a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of Paarl.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
Over the years, attendance numbers have fluctuated, with early rides drawing close to 100 participants. While recent years have seen smaller groups, the spirit of the event remains strong. The group continues to strive for the “magical 100” mark, hopeful that the community will rally to reach this milestone.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
The Champagne Ride is more than just a cycling event—it’s a celebration of community, friendship, and the love of the sport. It’s a time for cyclists to reflect on the year, connect with others who share their passion, and set the tone for the year ahead.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to the scene, the Paarl MTB Group welcomes you to join this unique and joyful tradition. Raise your glass, enjoy the ride, and become part of the legacy that makes Paarl MTB such a special part of the cycling world.
